Acknowledgements

A project of this nature cannot be done in isolation; by its very nature a lot of people have been involved along the way. It is a pleasure to take the opportunity to thank them all.

The church observations, which constitute the backbone of this project, would not have been possible without the support of the clergy and congregations of the churches involved. My heartfelt thanks and gratitude go to all of you, particularly to the young people who agreed to be interviewed. The research team could not have been made more welcome; it was a pleasure to work and worship with you.

Huge thanks must go to my research team - Sue Carey, Revd. David Chantler, Ben Hannen, Joan Hill and Jo Sibley - for their light heartedness, common sense and unswervingly professional support. The church observations simply couldn't have been done without them.

Thanks to all the teachers, who though working under enormous pressure, made time to complete and return my postal questionnaire. Without them, the project would have been missing a vital element.

For much needed financial support I would like to thank: John Bell and Graham Maule, Wild Goose Resource Group; Culham Educational Foundation; The Friends of Holy Trinity; Wendover Deanery Synod; the late Revd. Jonathan White; John and Janet Smith; Irene Chantler; Audrey Hewison; and Betty Haycock.

I have been encouraged and supported in my work by so many people it is impossible to name them all here. There are a few, however, that deserve a special mention: for steadfast support in so many ways, Professor Bill Tamblyn; my fellow students, Marion Paton, Michael Pyne and Ann Welsh; for fresh ideas, Philippa Wallin; for prayerful support, Sally Burrows, Caroline Everitt and Joan Hill; for help in securing funding, Revd. Mark Dearnley, Revd. Tim Harper, Revd. Mark Mowforth, Revd. Sheila Watson (Archdeacon of Buckingham); for sparking my love of liturgy, the late Revd. Jonathan White and Revd. Paul Smith; and for believing in me, Revd. John L. Bell.

Finally I offer my thanks and appreciation to my family: to my parents, Vonnie and David Chantler, for their supreme childcare service - I could never have even considered studying without their support; and to my husband Ben Hannen and my son Eric, who have gently upheld me through serious illness, and patiently endured the encroachment of this project on our family life for over a year. Ben has graciously put aside his own career to run the house and home-educate Eric whilst I have been ensconced in my work; to him I owe an enormous debt of gratitude.
