Observation Classification Criteria

It is vital that all the research team apply the same criteria when observing the level of sung participation of young people in church. The fields on the observation record sheets are defined below - please read them carefully.

  • Present
This refers to the number of children in your observation area only.
This number may change as young people move around the church, either to play, for communion or to go to Sunday School activities.

  • Singing Confidently
The young person is singing (with or without the use of the hymnbook) all or most of the song.

  • Singing
The young person is singing some, or a little of the song - perhaps the odd line here or there, or joining in the chorus if there is one.

  • Attempting to join in
The young person is following the words in the hymn book/song sheet, but is not actually singing.

  • Responding to the music
The young person is making a definite response to the music being sung (dancing, clapping, laughing, 'scribble singing'), but not singing the hymn/song. This category refers to young people developmentally unable to fulfil the requirements in the above fields (babies, toddlers and some with special needs).

  • Not participating
The young person is not attempting either to sing or to follow the printed words.

  • Can't see
The researcher is unable to see sufficiently well to accurately categorise the young person's level of sung participation.
