The spiral of alienation shows how young people spend most of their lives in the context of mainstream culture and only a limited period of time experiencing church culture in church and Sunday School. As Sunday Schools increasingly absorb mainstream cultural features into their work, the culture peculiar to church worship is diluted to the point where young people attending Sunday School gain limited exposure to the church culture that will enable them to participate in normal Sunday worship.
